“He who opens a school door, closes a prison” Victor Hugo
“ Education is vital to developing countries in bringing people out of poverty and giving them a sense of dignity, self-worth and confidence..” Scarlett Johansson
In March 2010, MECC commenced education, nutrition, poverty alleviation and harmony building programs. A local Siem Reap, Non Government Organisation called Build Your Future Today (BFT), under the directorship of the founder Mr. Sedtha Long, was funded to provide the education and poverty reduction programs for the project. The two room village primary school has been repaired and renovated. A concrete floor has replaced the dirt floor. Teacher’s salaries have been supplemented. Volunteer monks visit the school and conduct harmony building and moral education classes. A full time caretaker has been employed to maintain the school and has planted a school vegetable garden. Produce from the garden will provide a nutritious meal a day for the students.
Due to these improvements, school attendance has increased from 65 to 185. We predict that numbers will reach 230-250. In early June 2011, 24 members of the Rotaract Club of the Nanyang Technological University of Singapore, led by 2 volunteer carpenters from Australia, travelled to Cham Resh, and built two more classrooms onto the school.
